Otoplasty

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear surgery, is performed to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.

For the most part, the operation is done on children between the ages of four and 14. Ears are almost fully grown by age four, and the earlier the surgery, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient.

In the first consultation, Dr. Barlow will evaluate the patient's ears, and recommend the most effective technique. He will also give specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery.

Otoplasty is commonly performed in our office, under local anesthesia. In the case of small children who might be uncomfortable being awake during surgery, it is also possible to have the procedure performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. It usually takes between one to two hours.

Liposuction of the Neck/Chin

Did you know that a "double chin", or excess fat around the jaw line and neck, can be quickly eliminated using liposuction? It is becoming an increasingly popular procedure, and can be performed in the office under local anesthesia or in the hospital under general anesthesia.

Regardless of diet and exercis, sometimes when we age the body can accumulate fat that is hard to lose in certain areas. The neck is a problem area for many. Fat in the neck can make a young person appear older, and a fit person seem out of shape. Liposuction can give this area a new streamlined contour, enhancing the effect of facial features and improving the profile.

If you chose to come in for a consultation, Dr. Barlow would perform a physical examination to evaluate your overall weight, skin and muscle tone, and distribution of fat deposits. He would discuss the procedure, which would involve a tiny incision made under the chin to allow a thin tube [cannula] to be inseted into the fatty area to break up the unwanted fat. A high pressure vacuum is used to remove it, leaving the skin, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels intact.

Consultations are always complimentary, so if you think you may be a good candidate for this procedure please set up a time to come see Dr. Barlow.
